The length of a cap screw is measured from
the underhead bearing surface to the extreme end of the screw
Helpful Hint to Remember...
Formula to find the length of thread on a Hex Head Cap Screw:
Twice the Diameter plus 1/2" (2D+1/2)
example: A 3/8-16 x 5" Grade 5 Hex Head Cap Screw has 1-1/4" of Thread (2 times 3/8" plus 1/2") and 3-3/4" of Plain Shank ( 5" minus 1-1/4" equal 3-3/4") under the Head.
