FAQ

What pilot hole do I need for a stainless lag bolt?
Drill a pilot hole about 60 to 70 percent of the lag diameter in softwood and a little larger in hardwood. Stainless is softer than hardened steel, so a correct pilot hole and a little wax or anti-seize help prevent snapping or galling.

Why stainless lags in pressure treated lumber?
The chemicals in pressure treated wood corrode zinc plated steel. Stainless won't corrode or leave black stains.

Should I use 18-8 or 316 stainless?
18-8 is fine for most outdoor and wet jobs. 316 stainless adds molybdenum for better resistance to salt water, chlorides and many chemicals, so it is the better choice for boats, docks, pools and coastal sites. Contact us for 316 stainless.
