Zinc Plated vs. 316 Stainless Steel
- Zinc Plated – electro-galvanized steel, a thin, even zinc coat that resists rust. Sizes 3/16" to 1/2", with working load limits from 220 lb to 1,300 lb.
- 316 Stainless Steel – marine grade stainless for salt water, chemicals and wash-down areas. Sizes 3/16" to 1/2", with working load limits from 120 lb to 900 lb.
Common Uses
- Chains, ropes and cables
- Tie-downs and tarps
- Pet leashes and tie-outs
- Gates, swings and hammocks
- Boat lines, fenders and dock hardware (stainless)
How to Choose
- Load: pick a hook with a working load limit at or above your load – see the Data Sheets (PDF).
- Fit: the gate opening must fit over your chain link, ring or fitting, and your rope or shackle must fit the eye.
- Material: zinc plated for indoor and general outdoor use; 316 stainless for salt water and wet areas.
- Need a locked connection? Use chain repair quick links – their threaded sleeve is more secure than a spring gate.
Installation & Safety
- Press the gate in, clip the hook onto the chain, ring or fitting, and let the gate snap fully closed.
- Load the hook along its length, eye to hook. Never load the gate, and do not side load the hook.
- Inspect before each use. Do not use a hook that is bent, worn, or has a weak or broken spring.
- Never exceed the WLL and do not shock load. Not for overhead lifting, lifting people or fall protection.
FAQ
What is a spring snap hook?
A wire-formed hook with a spring-loaded gate that snaps shut on its own, plus a fixed eye for rope, chain or a shackle. It is also called a fireman snap or carabiner-style snap hook, and it clips on and off in seconds without tools.
Zinc plated or stainless steel snap hooks?
Zinc plated (electro-galvanized) snap hooks are a low-cost, higher-load choice for indoor and general outdoor use. Type 316 stainless steel snap hooks resist salt water and chemicals and are the best choice for boats, docks and wet areas.
What size snap hook do I need?
Pick a hook whose working load limit is at or above your load, and make sure the gate opening fits over your chain link, ring or fitting. The size is the wire diameter; all dimensions are on the Data Sheet (PDF).
Can spring snap hooks be used for overhead lifting?
No. Spring snap hooks are for tie-downs, lines, leashes and general connections, not overhead lifting, lifting people or fall protection. Use rated alloy lifting hardware for lifting.
