Common Uses
- Guy wires on wood poles and posts
- Hanging and tie-down points on timber
- Docks, piers and boat houses
- Barns, fences, gates and farm hardware
How to Choose
- Load: pick a size whose Working Load Limit (WLL) is above your load – from 500 lb (1/4") to 10,000 lb (1"), in-line pull.
- Length: the size is diameter x shank length. Make sure all of the thread goes into solid wood.
- Eye size: make sure your hook, shackle, rope or cable fits through the inside eye (D) – see the Data Sheet (PDF).
Installation & Safety
- Drill a pilot hole for the threaded part so the wood does not split and the threads hold fully (larger pilot hole in hardwood).
- Screw the eye in until all of the thread is in solid wood and the shoulder is snug against the surface – turn it with a bar through the eye.
- Avoid end grain, knots, rot and split wood. Holding power in wood can be lower than the WLL of the eye.
- Load in line with the shank for the full WLL. Angled loads lower the capacity; never load sideways across the eye.
- Never exceed the WLL, do not shock load, and do not use for lifting people.
FAQ
Do lag screw eyes need a pilot hole?
Yes. Drill a pilot hole for the threaded part so the wood does not split and the threads can hold fully.
What is the working load limit of a galvanized lag screw eye?
From 500 lb for 1/4" x 2" up to 10,000 lb for 1" x 6", for an in-line (straight) pull. Holding power in wood can be lower – it depends on the wood and thread depth.
Can I load a lag screw eye at an angle?
Lag screw eyes are strongest in line with the shank. Angled loads lower the capacity, and you should never load sideways across the eye.
Are galvanized lag screw eyes good outdoors?
Yes. Hot-dip galvanizing protects the steel for outdoor, wet and marine use, such as docks, poles and fences.
