FAQ
How do carriage bolts work?
The square neck under the round head pulls into the wood as the nut is tightened, so the bolt can't turn. Only the nut side needs a wrench, and the smooth head is hard to remove from outside.
What size hole do I drill for a carriage bolt?
Drill the same size as the bolt diameter, such as 3/8" for a 3/8" bolt, so the square neck can bite into the wood.
Should I use 18-8 or 316 stainless?
18-8 is fine for most outdoor and wet jobs. 316 stainless adds molybdenum for better resistance to salt water, chlorides and many chemicals, so it is the better choice for boats, docks, pools and coastal sites. Contact us for 316 stainless.
