FAQ
Machine screw or sheet metal screw?
A machine screw has a uniform thread made for a nut or a tapped hole. A sheet metal (self tapping) screw has a sharp point and a coarser thread that cuts its own thread in sheet metal, plastic or wood.
How is a sheet metal screw measured?
Size is the gauge (#4, #6, #8 and so on). Length is measured from under the head for pan, truss and hex washer heads, and from the top of the head for flat and oval heads.
What pilot hole do I need for a sheet metal screw?
A pilot hole a little smaller than the screw's minor diameter works in sheet metal. Drill a little larger in thick or hard material. Self drilling screws need no pilot hole in thin steel.
