FAQ
How do I keep brass wood screws from breaking?
Drill a pilot hole and a shank clearance hole, then drive a steel screw of the same size first to cut the threads. Remove it and drive the brass screw by hand. A little wax on the threads helps, especially in hardwood.
What pilot hole should I drill?
In hardwood: #4 1/16", #6 3/32", #8 7/64", #10 1/8", #12 9/64", #14 5/32". Use one size smaller in softwood. Each size page lists the shank clearance hole too.
Do brass fasteners rust?
No. Brass contains no iron, so it does not rust. It will tarnish and darken over time, especially outdoors. Polish it to keep it bright or let it age to a natural patina.
