FAQ
Machine screw or sheet metal screw?
A machine screw has a uniform machine thread and goes into a nut or a tapped hole. A sheet metal (self tapping) screw has a sharp point and coarse thread that forms its own thread in a pre-drilled hole in sheet metal, plastic or wood.
Do sheet metal screws need a pilot hole?
Yes. Drill a pilot hole a little smaller than the screw's major diameter. The screw then forms its own threads. Use a slightly larger hole in thicker or harder material.
How are screw lengths measured?
Flat head (countersunk) screws are measured overall, from the top of the head to the tip. Pan, truss, round and hex washer head screws are measured from under the head to the tip.
