Castle nut or slotted nut?
A castle nut has a narrower round crown with the slots cut in it; a slotted nut has slots cut across the full hex. Both lock with a cotter pin.

How do I line up the cotter pin hole?
Tighten to the specified torque, then keep tightening to the next slot. Never back the nut off to line up a slot.
