FAQ
How strong are 18-8 stainless bolts?
18-8 stainless bolts to ASTM F593 have a minimum tensile strength of about 100,000 psi in 1/4" to 5/8" and about 85,000 psi in 3/4" to 1-1/2". That is stronger than Grade 2 steel but not as strong as Grade 5 or Grade 8.
How do I stop stainless threads from galling?
Stainless threads can seize (gall) when tightened fast or under heavy load. Put anti-seize on the threads, tighten slowly at low speed, keep the threads clean and don't overtighten.
Should I use 18-8 or 316 stainless?
18-8 is fine for most outdoor and wet jobs. 316 stainless adds molybdenum for better resistance to salt water, chlorides and many chemicals, so it is the better choice for boats, docks, pools and coastal sites. Contact us for 316 stainless.
Can I use stainless with zinc plated or galvanized parts?
Use stainless nuts and washers with stainless bolts and screws. In wet conditions, stainless touching zinc plated, galvanized or aluminum parts can cause galvanic corrosion of the zinc or aluminum.
