How long should the bolt be for an acorn nut?
The bolt must stop short of the dome. If it is too long, the nut bottoms out before it is tight.

Are metric and inch fasteners interchangeable?
No. Close sizes such as M6 and 1/4" or M10 and 3/8" have different diameters and thread pitches and will cross thread. Use metric nuts and washers with metric bolts and screws.
