Hex Jam (Thin) Nuts - (USS) Coarse Thread

Hex jam nuts, also called thin nuts, are about two-thirds the height of a standard hex nut. In USS coarse thread they are most often tightened against a full nut to lock it in place on threaded rod or a bolt. They are also used where space is tight. All sizes are zinc plated, from 1/4"-20 to 1-1/2"-6.

FAQ

How do I lock a nut with a jam nut?
Thread the jam nut on, then the full nut. Hold the full nut with a wrench and tighten the jam nut against it so the two nuts bind on the threads.

Can a jam nut carry the full load of a bolt?
No. A jam nut is thinner, so it has less thread engagement. Use it as a locking or spacing nut, not as the main load-bearing nut.
